This Week on HayBiz, October 5 to 11

A free jobs center most of Glendale has never walked into, paid election work where your Armenian is the qualification, and two good reasons to be out this weekend. Here is the week.

Song of the week: Our People, listen and read the lyrics at the bottom of this page.

This week

• Monday, October 5: Glendale's free jobs center. The Verdugo Jobs Center at 1255 S Central Ave is run by the City of Glendale and costs nothing. Inside: resume help, workshops, training programs, and job fairs where employers interview on site. You do not have to be unemployed to use it, and it pays to go in person, because the staff know which local employers are hiring this month. Details at verdugoworks.com.
• Tuesday, October 6: LA County wants Armenian-speaking election workers. The general election is Tuesday, November 3, and the county's Community Election Workers program recruits Armenian speakers for its vote centers. The work is paid, trained and short-term, and it gives you US experience and a US reference. Apply at lavote.gov or call (800) 815-2666, option 7. Training happens before Election Day, so apply now.
• Wednesday, October 7: if a job asks you for money, it is not a job. Stop if someone wants you to pay for training or a "background check", sends a check and asks you to wire part of it back, or wants your Social Security number before there is a written offer. Look up the business yourself and call the number on its own website. HayBiz is free on both sides. If a listing looks wrong to you, tell us and we will take it down.
• Friday, October 9: caregiving hires all year. Home care is some of the steadiest work in Glendale and Burbank, and families want someone who can speak with an elderly parent in Armenian. Look for caregiver, CNA and home health aide roles, live-in or hourly, overnight or weekends. Most hire on character and reliability and train you on the rest.
• Saturday, October 10: Feast of the Holy Translators. Our churches honor Mesrop Mashtots and the scholars who built the alphabet. If you carry both languages, put one line above your experience: "Fluent in Armenian and English, spoken and written." Employers, write the same line into your listing and watch who answers.
• Sunday, October 11: GiniFest, 3 to 9 PM. The 9th Annual Armenian Wine and Spirits Festival is at The Center for Armenian Arts in Glendale. The owners of restaurants, markets, bakeries and wine shops will be standing at their own tables, which makes "are you hiring?" an easy question to ask. Employers who need servers, kitchen hands or event crew: post the role now so it is live while people are looking.

On the board

• 1 new job this week on haybiz.us: Receptionist at a dog kennel, Glendale. 100 roles are open in all.
• Tip of the week: have your references ready before anyone asks. Ask three people first, a former manager if you can. Give them a heads-up when you apply somewhere serious, and keep a simple list: name, how they know you, phone, email.
